One of the most important philosophical insights in Buddhism comes from what is known as the theory of emptiness. At its heart is the deep recognition that there is a fundamental disparity between the way we perceive the world, including our own experience in it, and the way things actually are.

In our day-to-day experience, we tend to relate to the world and to ourselves as if these entities possessed self-enclosed, definable, discrete and enduring reality. For instance, if we examine our own conception of selfhood, we will find that we tend to believe in the presence of an essential core to our being, which characterises our individuality and identity as a discrete ego, independent of the physical and mental elements that constitute our existence.

The philosophy of emptiness reveals that this is not only a fundamental error but also the basis for attachment, clinging and the development of our numerous prejudices. According to the theory of emptiness, any belief in an objective reality grounded in the assumption of intrinsic, independent existence is simply untenable. All things and events, whether ‘material’, mental or even abstract concepts like time, are devoid of objective, independent existence.

To intrinsically possess such independent existence would imply that all things and events are somehow complete unto themselves and are therefore entirely self-contained. This would mean that nothing has the capacity to interact with or exert influence on any other phenomena. But we know that there is cause and effect – turn a key in a car, the starter motor turns the engine over, spark plugs ignite and fuel begins to burn… Yet in a universe of self-contained, inherently existing things, these events could never occur!

So effectively, the notion of intrinsic existence is incompatible with causation; this is because causation implies contingency and dependence, while anything that inherently existed would be immutable and self-enclosed. In the theory of emptiness, everything is argued as merely being composed of dependently related events; of continuously interacting phenomena with no fixed, immutable essence, which are themselves in dynamic and constantly changing relations. Thus, things and events are ‘empty’ in that they can never possess any immutable essence, intrinsic reality or absolute ‘being’ that affords independence.

Íslendingasögunum

The oldest surviving Icelandic literature is poetry, some of it almost certainly being composed before the settlement of Iceland, either in Scandinavia or Scandinavian settlements elsewhere.
Elstu íslenskum bókmenntum er skáldskapur, eitthvað af því nánast örugglega verið samin fyrir landnám Íslands, annaðhvort í Skandinavíu eða Scandinavian uppgjör annars staðar.
These poems, however, are preserved in Icelandic manuscripts, and nowhere else.
Þessi ljóð eru hins vegar varðveitt í íslenskum handritum, og hvergi annars staðar.

These poems can be divided into two categories, the Eddic and the Skaldic poems.

Þetta ljóð má skipta í tvo flokka, Eddic og skáldamál ljóð. The Eddic poems are composed in free variable metres. The Eddic ljóð eru samin af ókeypis metra breytu. There are two distinct classes of Eddic poetry, the heroic lays and the mythological lays. Það eru tvö aðskilin flokkum Eddic ljóð, the hetjulegur mælt og goðsögulegum setur.

The heroic lays are based on legends, many of which derive from continental Germany, and even from the Goths of southeastern Europe. The hetjulegur mælt er byggt á goðsögnum, sem margir sem rekja má frá meginlandi Þýskaland, og jafnvel úr Goths af suðaustur-Evrópu. The mythological lays are about northern gods, and of wisdom attributed to them. The goðsögulegum sett eru um Norður-guði og speki rekja til þeirra. Probably the most famous of the latter are the Völuspá (Sibyl’s Propechy) and the Hávamál (Words of the High One). Sennilega frægustu í síðari eru Völuspá (Sibyl’s Propechy) og Hávamál (orð High One). Völuspá is supposedly spoken spoken by a sibyl, who tells the history of the world, of gods, men and monsters, from the beginning until the Ragnarök, when the gods will fall, the sun become black, smoke and fire will gush forth and the earth sink in total darkness. YES, Ill repeat that I think!!!!

until the Ragnarök, when the gods will fall, the sun become black, smoke and fire will gush forth and the earth sink in total darkness.

Notes:

The name Eyjafjallajökull is made up of the words

  • eyja (genitive plural of ey, meaning eyot or island),
  • fjalla (genitive plural of fjall, whose nominative plural is fjöll, meaning fells or mountains) and
  • jökull (meaning glacier, cognate with the -icle in icicle).
  • A literal translation would thus be the “island-fells glacier” or the “island-mountains glacier”. The name Eyjafjöll describes the southern side of the volcanic massif together with the small mountains which form the foot of the volcano. The village and museum of Skógar are also part of the region undir Eyjafjöllum (meaning “under the Eyjafjalls”).

The Hávamál was almost certainly composed before the settlement of Iceland, and handed down orally until it was written in Iceland.
The Hávamál var nær örugglega samið fyrir landnám Íslands, og afhenti niður munnlega þar til hann var skrifaður á Íslandi. The form of the Skaldic poetry is much stricter than that of the Eddic poetry. Formi skáldamál ljóð er mikið strangari en í því Eddic ljóð. The syntax is very complex, and the skalds used highly specialized vocabulary. The setningafræði er mjög flókið og skalds nota sérhæfðan orðaforða. The greatest of all the skalds was Egill Skallagrímsson. Mesta allra skalds var Egill Skalla-Grímsson. One of his best known poems is Höfuðlausn (Head Ransom), composed in York in ca. 948. Einn af þekktustu ljóð hans er Höfuðlausn (Head Ransom), samin í York í ca. 948. 948. Egill was held captive by Erik Bloodaxe, then ruling York, and was to be executed. Egill var haldið til fanga af Erik blóðöx, þá úrskurður York, og átti að framkvæma. During the night before the intended execution he composed this poem in honour of his enemy, and was granted his own head as a reward. Yes that is right: and was granted his own head as a reward. Um nóttina áður en ætlað framkvæmd samdi þetta ljóð til heiðurs óvinur hans, og var veitt eigin höfði hans sem verðlaun.

During the 12th and the 13th centuries there were some great historians at work in Iceland, concentrating on Icelandic history and the histories of the kings of Norway. Á 12. og 13. öld voru sumir mikill sagnfræðingar við vinnu á Íslandi, einbeitingu um íslenska sögu og sögu um konunga Noregs. The most important work of this kind is probably the Landnámabók (Book of Settlements), a detailed history of the settlement of Iceland, and Heimskringla (Orb of the World), a history of the kings of Norway up to 1184. Mikilvægasta starf af þessu tagi er líklega Landnámabók (Landnámabók), nákvæm saga landnáms á Íslandi, og Heimskringlu (Hnöttur fugla), sögu um konunga Noregs allt að 1184. The Heimskringla was written by Snorri Sturluson (1179-1241). The Heimskringla var skrifuð af Snorra Sturlusonar (1179-1241). Snorri also wrote the Prose Edda, a handbook of prosody and poetic diction Snorri skrifaði einnig Snorra-Edda, sem er handbók um prosody og ljóðræn sögu. In it are many tales of pagan gods and heroes. Í henni eru margar sagnir af guði heiðnu og hetja.

The Icelanders’ Sagas (or Family Sagas), written in the 13th century, are the crown of Icelandic literature. Íslendingasögur Íslendingar (eða Family sagna), skrifuð á 13. öld, eru kórónu íslenskum bókmenntum. Usually they are about heroes supposed to have lived in Iceland in the 10th and 11th centuries. Venjulega eru um hetjur eiga að hafa búið á Íslandi á 10. og 11. öld. The artistic values of the best of these are not disputed. Listræna gildi af the bestur af þessir ert ekki deilt. Most of these sagas seem to lie somewhere between history and intentional fiction. Flest þessara sagna virðist liggja einhvers staðar á milli sögu og vísvitandi skáldskapur. Their characterization is vivid and they show deep sympathy and understanding of human tragedy. eiginleikum þeirra er skær og þeir sýna djúpa samúð og skilning manna harmleikur. The style is plain and compact, with adjectives used sparingly, and with great emphasis on dialogue. Stíllinn er látlaus og samningur, sem lýsingarorð notuð sparlega, en með mikla áherslu á samskipti. The sagas are about love and hatred, family feuds and vengeance, loyalty and friendship, and tragic destiny. The sögur eru um ást og hatur, fjölskyldu feuds og hefnd, tryggð og vináttu, og hörmulega örlög. Some of the besk known sagas are Grettis saga, about the outlaw Grettir the Strong; Laxdæla saga, a delicately written tragedy, covering four or five generations, with women playing prominent roles; Egils Saga, about the ugly and truculent viking-poet Egill Skallagrímsson; and Njáls saga, generally considered the greatest of them all, about two heroes, Gunnar, a brave, guileless youth, and Njáll, a wise and prudent man with prophetic gifts, and their friendship and heroic deaths. Sumir af the besk þekktur sögur eru Grettis saga, um útlaga Grettir sterki; Laxdæla saga, a delicately skrifað harmleikur sem spannar fjögur eða fimm kynslóðir, við konur leika áberandi hlutverk; Egils Sögu um ljótt og truculent víkingur-skáldið Egill Skallagrímsson og Njálu, almennt talin hinn mesti af þeim öllum, um tvær hetjur, Gunnar, hraustur, guileless æsku og Njáll, vitur og skynsamlegri maður með Spámanleg gjafir og vináttu þeirra og hetjulegur dáið.

A Brief History

So when did blogging begin? Although blogs are a recent invention, the idea is not new. Blogs evolved from online diaries that people kept from the earliest days of the Internet. Blogs as we think of them today are a combination of a personal journal, a message board and a news site. Let’s look at the milestones of blogging.

1994 – It is uncertain who started the very first blog. Justin Hall is credited by some to be the “founding father” of blogging for starting his “Proto-Blog” in December 1994 while still a student at Swarthmore College. Justin maintained this online journaling for 11 years.

1997 Jorn Barger first used the term “web log” to describe a simple website where people post interesting links that they found while surfing the net.

1998 Open Diary launched their website which would grow to thousands. Open Diary is credited with adding the ability for readers to make comment.

1999 Peter Merholz jokingly breaks weblog apart into “We Blog.” This was quickly adopted and shortened to blog. Blog became adopted as both a noun and a verb. LiveJournal and Blogger.com were launched as the first hosted blog tools.

2002 Heather Armstrong is fired for discussing her job in her personal blog which was named “Dooce.” Dooced becomes the term that means “Fired for blogging.”

2004 Merriam-Webster the prominent dictionary publisher announced that “Blog” was the word of the year.

2004 marked a turning point where blogging became adopted into everyday life.

2007 there were over 100 million blogs being tracked. Millions of people look to blogs as their source for information, news or just a good laugh.

Blogs have become a driving force in grass root breaking, and shaping of news stories. An example is known a Rathergate where Dan Rather presented documents on 60 Minutes that conflicted with accepted accounts of President Bush’s service records. Bloggers declared these documents forgeries and applied extreme pressure to CBS. This exposed reporting irregularities that lead to a public CBS apology.
